Overview
Canopy is a macOS utility that runs entirely on your device. We believe in privacy by design, so your data stays on your Mac. This policy explains what we do, and just as importantly what we do not do, with any information.
Data collection
Canopy does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. There are no analytics, no tracking, and no telemetry built into the app. During normal use, the app does not communicate with any servers.
Information such as your media playback, notifications, and battery status is read locally on your Mac and displayed in the notch. It never leaves your device.
A small number of features do make network requests. Each is described below so you can see exactly what is sent and why. Apart from these, nothing leaves your Mac.
Lyrics
When lyrics are enabled, the title and artist of the currently playing track are sent to our server, which retrieves synchronized lyrics from LRCLib on your behalf. That request passes through our infrastructure. The track details are used only to fulfill the request, are not stored, and are not linked to your identity. If you disable lyrics, no such requests are made.
Weather
Weather data is fetched from Apple WeatherKit using your approximate location. No other information is transmitted with that request.
Update checks
The app may check for updates by requesting a version manifest from our servers. No personal information is included in this request.
License activation
When you activate your license, your activation code is validated against our server. No personally identifiable information is sent, only the activation code and a device identifier used to enforce the device limit on your license.
The app also re-validates your license each time it launches, to confirm it is still active and to check which devices are registered to it. The same information is sent as on activation.
You can view and remove your activated devices at any time.
Payments
Payments are processed securely by Stripe. We do not store your credit card information. Stripe's privacy policy governs how your payment data is handled.
Third parties
We do not share any data with third parties. There are no ads, no affiliate tracking, and no embedded third party services within the app.
Media controls for services like Spotify and Apple Music interact with those apps locally on your Mac. Canopy does not send your information to those services.
Children's privacy
Canopy is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so it can be removed.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the last updated date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically to stay informed.
